The UCSF Center for Birth Justice (CBJ) works at the intersection of research, community partnership, and education to create systemic change, making birth safer for Black families and improving conditions for all families.
Born from UCSF’s California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi), CBJ represents an intentional evolution—moving from a research initiative focused on preterm birth to a center geared to serve the research needs of the Black birth justice movement with an emphasis on advancing interventions. This transition reflects our deep commitment to community-led efforts coupled with action. Our work doesn't just end with academic publications. Our investment in better knowledge creates a tangible impact for birthing families and translates findings into culturally competent public awareness and policy advocacy.
