About Us

The Lemhi County Historical Society and Museum comprises historical exhibits focuses on life in the American West, the American West in Transition, educational interpretation, photography, and ecological and historical exhibits on the Salmon, Middle Fork, Lemhi, and Pahsimeroi Rivers. We also have a research center for schools, community members, and visiting scholars, which contains, among other items, local and regional records on agriculture, mining, water, as well as personal diaries and photographs. Our mission is to  preserve, exhibit, and interpret Lemhi County’s cultural and historical heritage, which we do through programs and exhibits. We are an educational and curatorial institution.  We believe that history is an educational tool and should be used to inform us all in decision-making, cultural interaction, governance, and policy development. Not every element of the past is of earth-shattering importance, but it is the acquisition of information that will make us all better members of our communities.
