SAMOS VOLUNTEERS is a response to the refugee crisis on the island of Samos. This initiative evolved in the summer of 2015 to support local residents who had come together to provide emergency assistance to refugees arriving by boat.
Our daily presence in the camp has allowed us to build relationships with the now largely static population of refugees in the camp. We have developed a needs assessment system to provide a well-targeted and effective distribution service. Refugees work in our team, and we coordinate educational and recreation programmes that are primarily refugee-led.
Our current daily activities at the camp are:
- Needs based assessments
- Clothes distribution
- Distribution of hygiene items (shampoo, soap, washing powder, sanitary towels, infant formula and diapers)
- Adult education English classes
- Classroom support for child education classes (English, Arabic and Farsi).
