First Book-Greater New Orleans
First Book is an award-winning nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.
First Book provides an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs. First Book-Greater New Orleans is a local, community-based advisory board affiliated with the national First Book. First Book-Greater New Orleans was organized in 2001. Since Hurricane Katrina, we have raised enough funds to distribute over 85,000 brand-new books to over 10,500 children in the greater New Orleans area. We partner with individuals, local celebrities, nonprofits, and businesses for contributions and to put on literacy promotion events and book distributions. We are a 100% volunteer-run organization made up community members from diverse backgrounds.
First Book volunteers create a series of fundraising opportunities to raise funds for books for local programs and schools serving kids in need. If you’re passionate about providing books kids in need, we need your time and talents to:
- raise funds to grant books to more kids
- identify and register programs and schools serving kids in need
- spread the word about First Book in your community; and
- participate in national First Book initiatives and campaigns
First Book-Greater New Orleans, an Advisory Board serving the Greater New Orleans metro area, is looking for volunteers to join us in our efforts to ensure that all kids in Greater New Orleans have access to books.
