About Us

Arc Greater Twin Cities is a grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include Down syndrome and other types of mental retardation, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and other related conditions.

Arc Greater Twin Cities was founded in Minneapolis in 1946 by a group of concerned parents and educators looking for options other than institutionalization for their children with mental retardation. This grassroots beginning led to the creation of over 900 state and local chapters of The Arc nationwide. This network of Arc chapters has been a leader in creating services where none existed for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. It continues to forge new paths that ensure all people with disabilities are engaged, contributing members of our communities.
