About Us

Mission & History

Founded in 1974, Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) is a leading regional theater company whose mission is to produce, develop, and present imaginative and entertaining contemporary theater focused on the American experience that both ignites the intellect and touches the soul. Each season includes productions of plays and musicals that represent the diverse range of contemporary American theater, as well as summer programming and special presented events.

Under the leadership of Sara Garonzik, who has been the company's Producing Artistic Director since 1982, PTC supports the work of a growing body of diverse dramatists and takes pride in being a home to scores of nationally recognized artists who have participated in more than 140 world and Philadelphia premieres by leading playwrights such as Terrence McNally, Edward Albee, Lynn Nottage, and August Wilson. More than 50% of our world premieres have moved on to New York and other major cities, earning Philadelphia a national reputation as a home for new play development.
