  • Mission

To empower, connect, and support girls and young women who have experienced the loss of their mothers.

    About Us

The empowerHER story starts with a young girl who has lost her mother. Founder Cara Belvin formed empowerHER in 2013 out of the gratitude she had for all the support her family received after her own mother Kit died of breast cancer. Cara was just 9 years old and desperate to meet others who could relate to her loss - And, now with the support of countless volunteers + donors, Cara’s simple

    idea became a reality.

empowerHER is the only organization in the country specifically working to address the struggles of girls whose mothers have died, and we’re doing vital work. empowerHER was formed in 2013 as a grassroots movement in an effort to bring teenage girls together on Mother’s Day weekend.

Today, empowerHER provides an integrated series of programming featuring year-round EVENTS for GIRLS, such as our signature Mother’s Day Retreat, Beach Bash, Cooking Classes, Yoga and more. Events are community-based and non-therapeutic and serve to remind girls they are not alone in their grief. These events occur in tandem with our MENTOR MATCH PROGRAM with caring + strong female role models who promote positive growth throughout the grief journey. All programs and activities are provided at no charge to the family and are available both in-person and virtually.
