  • Mission

The Northeast Kansas Rail Alliance advocates for commuter rail infrastructure that connects Lawrence, the K-10 corridor, and Kansas City, serving as the critical northern extension of the Northern Flyer Alliance's intercity rail vision. We believe Kansas deserves 21st-century transportation that reduces congestion, connects communities, supports economic development, and honors our state's rich railroad heritage.

    About Us

The Northeast Kansas Rail Alliance is the Northeast Kansas chapter of the Northern Flyer Alliance, with a focus on bringing frequent commuter rail service to the K-10 corridor between Lawrence and Kansas City.

Our Story: Kansas once had one of the nation's most extensive rail networks. We're not inventing something new—we're rediscovering our roots. As KDOT plans a $1.16 billion highway expansion along K-10, we face a critical choice: lock in another 50 years of car-dependent sprawl, or invest in transformative rail infrastructure that removes vehicles from highways rather than just managing congestion.

    Whom We Serve:

    • Daily commuters traveling between Lawrence, De Soto, Olathe, Lenexa, and Overland Park
    • Major employers like Panasonic (4,000 employees), the University of Kansas, and countless tech companies that need reliable workforce transportation
    • Communities seeking sustainable development, reduced emissions, and improved quality of life
    • Young professionals who increasingly demand transit options as a prerequisite for where they live and work

    Our Values:

    • Data-driven advocacy - We ground our vision in economic analysis, ridership projections, and technical feasibility
    • Regional collaboration - We work across jurisdictions, partnering with cities, counties, businesses, and the Northern Flyer Alliance.
    • Urgency with vision - We act now to preserve rail corridors while planning for generational transformation.
    • Inclusive growth - Rail infrastructure should connect people to opportunity, not just serve the already-connected
    • Heritage + innovation - We honor Kansas's railroad legacy while building modern, sustainable transportation.

Our Approach: We're a grassroots coalition backed by technical expertise, business support, and regional planning coordination. We don't just advocate—we provide the data, analysis, and political strategy needed to turn vision into reality. Our parent organization, the Northern Flyer Alliance, successfully passed Kansas Senate Bill 125 in April 2025, giving KDOT broad authority and $5 million for passenger rail initiatives. We're building on that momentum.

Why Now: KDOT's K-10 highway design is happening right now. If we don't preserve the rail right-of-way in this design phase, we lose the corridor for decades. The window is closing. We need passionate volunteers, sponsors, and coalition partners to help us move fast.

We're not asking permission to dream—we're building the coalition to make it happen.
