Silk Road Project
Founded in 1998 by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who serves as its artistic director, Silkroad seeks to promote cross-cultural understanding, learning, and innovation through the arts. Much of Silkroad’s work is led by the Silk Road Ensemble, an international collective of musicians that performs around the world modeling new forms of cultural exchange through music and performance. The Ensemble has recorded six albums and is featured in a 2016 documentary by Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville, The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. Silkroad’s programmatic activities have featured partnerships with NYC public schools, Harvard Business School, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the American Museum of Natural History, the Getty Museum of Art, and others. Silkroad’s work has been recognized by numerous organizations including the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Today, Silkroad’s worldwide audience continues to expand and the organization is poised for significant programmatic growth.
