Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) Greater New England Chapter

  • Mission

The mission of Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to treat, prevent, and, ultimately, cure T1D and its complications. Founded in 1970 by families determined to drive cures for their loved ones living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), we are the leading global T1D research and advocacy organization. As we drive toward curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.

    About Us

Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, Breakthrough T1D is now the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of Breakthrough T1D research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D.

Our strength lies in our exclusive focus and singular influence on the worldwide effort to end T1D. Breakthrough T1D works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people-and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it-by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community. We’ve funded more than $2 billion in research to date and made significant progress in understanding and fighting the disease.

T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with T1D have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
