About Us

Umoja- Network for Africa was founded in 2008 and serves the purpose of supporting the development corporation, arranges educational projects on the African continent and supports the local community to organize themselves and to conquer poverty and misery. The society offers help to self-help. Since its foundation Umoja – Network for Africa has got twenty members additional to the 8 members that have founded the institution. In 2009 Umoja has worked exclusively on public relation work in order to raise funds and to get new supporters for our projects, the support in the extension of an orphanage called “Tumaini” in Bukoba, Tanzania and an multidisciplinary centre in Bafang Region in Cameroon. Following the example of the Project in the Bafang Region in Cameroon Umoja – Network for Africa plans to implement an educational projects in Zanzibar and to build a community center resp. a people’s school that is grant-aided and provides the local population in Nungwi in the North District of Zanzibar and the neighboring villages with education that is free of charge. In Nungwi Umoja – Network for Africa wants to create a place where the local population can meet together and exchange their ideas. We focus on the exchange of experiences, ideas and other existing knowledge about everyday problems, experiences with social political commitment and professional challenges. Our goal is the processing of individual knowledge in the community in an organized way and to make the information accessible for everyone. In communities of interests and workshops we want to provide the local population through e. g. study communities, theater, dance or artistic activities with useful knowledge as like pc-skills, languages, Organization/Marketing and crafts skills. To make this possible, we want to supply computer work stations and a library. Furthermore it will be for the youth a place where they can spend and design their leisure time usefully, e. g. by athletic and artistic activities, tutoring with school groups, informational events about possible future professional prospects resp. introductory training programs that provide the young and unemployed people with the primary basic information of different professions. This year Umoja implements small-scale projects for the children in Nungwi as like the media and culture pedagogic workshop “Mchezo” that works on the use of photographing and preparing an exposition about the topic “How does children in Zanzibar play?”. In the end there will be a comparison study in German schools to investigate the way of playing of German children with a following exposition in German schools and in Nungwi. In addition to that Umoja implementt workshops on artistic skills as like screen-print and painting in Nungwi by providing material and professionals. As well as Umoja offers to the local population income-generating projects. Umoja – Network for Africa supplies craftsmen resp. Artists and musicians with necessary materials or funds in order to produce their own products and supports them in marketing and sale of the products. In October 2010 it has been built up a playground and sports ground on the school compound of the Nungwi School in Zanzibar in cooperation with a German Ngo called Almaterra based in Hamburg. This Ngo also wants to support our planned grant-aided school by providing computers and multimedia equipment. The playground project has the aim to create new free space for the young people in Nungwi especially because of the increasing tourism development and the associated loss of freedom.
