Preparing to offer its fifteenth summer of service to Sacramento's future leaders, Breakthrough Sacramento is a year-round, tuition-free college-preparatory program for approximately 90 diverse and academically-motivated students attending under-resourced schools in the Sacramento area. Breakthrough Sacramento is hosted at Sacramento Country Day School, but the students we serve are primarily from public schools in the Meadowview, Oak Park, and Del Paso Heights neighborhoods. As a member of the Breakthrough Collaborative, Breakthrough is also a teacher-training program. Every summer we hire 28 talented high school and college students to serve as teachers that reflect our student population. This puts our student teacher ratio at 3:1. With our "Students teaching Students" model, the faculty not only teaches, but also inspires the younger students. Through year-round academic programs in middle school and outreach during high school, students are supported on their path to becoming first-generation college graduates. Research has shown that these students will end the cycle of poverty in their families. Breakthrough has the dual mission of supporting younger students on their path to college graduation and encouraging older students to consider careers in education.
