Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Inc.(SDHHS) is a bi-lingual, bi-cultural, non-profit organization which provides a variety of support services and programs for persons with a hearing loss. Services include sign language interpreting, computerized note-taking, vocational counseling, early childhood and family program, community service assistance, information and accessibility to many technical aids, assistive and signaling devices and a discount hearing aid battery program.

Almost two million Canadians have a hearing loss. Hearing loss is one of the fastest growing disabilities in North America. Hearing loss can be caused by many factors and occur at any age. Some factors include our aging population, the increase in noise pollution, genetic factors, disease-related, the side-effects of medication, or an accident. Hearing loss often occurs over a long period of time, but can also happen very suddenly. It is sometimes thought of as an invisible disability because often there is very little to visually indicate a person is living with a hearing loss.

Hearing loss interferes with the most vital link to our environment, which is to effectively communicate with other people. This interference often causes persons with a hearing loss to be isolated from family, friends and the larger community. SDHHS is committed to providing services and supports to assist Deaf, Late-Deafened, Deaf/Blind and Hard of Hearing persons to fully participate in their lives and communities.
