SOS-Gyermekfalu Magyarországi Alapítványa (SOS Children's Villages Hungary)
SOS Children's Villages is an independent, non-governmental international development organization which has been working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949. The mission of the organisation is to provide a supporting and caring environment for the healthy development of children who for some reason cannot be brought up by their biological family. This reason can be - among others - domestic violence or neglect, parental separation or death, sexual abuse, diseases.
SOS has started to work in Hungary in 1983. Currently there are 3 children's villages (CVs) operating in the country: in Kecskemét, Kőszeg and Orosháza. CVs are formed by 10-12 family houses where professional foster parents provide family-based care for abandoned children and at all three locations there are also SOS foster parents who raise the children outside the CVs, in their own home. Besides the CVs SOS Hungary runs 5 Youth Facilities for youngsters with fewer opportunities coming from difficult family backgrounds. Moreover, SOS Hungary has Family Strengthening Programmes for vulnerable families in risk in order to prevent family breakdown in Kecskemét, Battonya and Orosháza.
At the moment ca. 400 children and young people live in the care of SOS Children's Villages Hungary.
There are also 100+ volunteers supporting SOS Hungary in reaching its mission and create abandoned children safe and loving homes.
