Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern CT is a nonprofit agency operated under the national umbrella of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Our vision is that every child succeeds in life. Our carefully-screened, volunteer mentors ignite the potential of children facing adversity in the community.
We operate on the premise that a one-to-one relationship with an adult provides the support a child needs to grow and mature into a responsible adult. The program is free to families. We depend on the support of the United Way, private foundations, and personal and corporate donations from the communities we serve.
Studies by independent research groups have shown Big Brothers Big Sisters' programs have a significant positive impact:
64% of students developed more positive attitudes toward school
60% improved relationships with adults
56% improved relationships with their peers
The outcome of this friendship?
Research from around the country, collected from observing the results of the program for 100 years, shows positive differences in the child's life. His or her self-esteem increases, attitude toward school improves and relationships with family and friends get even better.
Who can take part in the program?
We serve children aged 6 to 18, and enroll up to and including age 14. Volunteers for our community based programs must be over 18, live in our coverage area, and commit to one year of twice monthly meetings with their mentee.
