About Us

The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center recruits, trains, and mobilizes volunteer attorneys to take pro bono cases serving individuals experiencing poverty who are at risk of losing their homes, their livelihoods, or their families. The Center also helps small businesses and community-based nonprofits needing legal assistance. In collaboration with more than 1,500 dedicated attorney volunteers, we operate award-winning legal clinics, projects, and resource centers where and when the community most needs our help.

Established in 1978, the Pro Bono Center is the largest provider of pro bono legal help in the District of Columbia, serving up to 20,000 people and organizations each year. The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center is an independent, nonprofit charitable organization supported entirely by voluntary contributions.

The District of Columbia Bar, created by the D.C. Court of Appeals in 1972, is the second largest unified bar in the United States. The precipitating force for the D.C. Bar's creation was the legal community's desire to have a single organization that could uphold the ethical standards and rules of professional conduct. Today the Bar's mission is to provide service to the profession, the courts, and the community.
