The Shambhala Meditation Center of Philadelphia is a vibrant community inspired by the principle that every human being has a fundamental nature of basic goodness, wisdom and compassion. For over 40 years, the Shambhala Meditation Center has offered programs on meditation, contemplative practice, and the arts, as well as a wide range of cultural and social activities that cultivate wakefulness and creativity.
Our approach to the practice and study of meditation is grounded in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition. Our mission is to inspire an awake and compassionate society through personal and collective transformation. To lower barriers to access, our meditation sessions are offered free of charge, many of our events and programs are offered with a "suggested donation," and our reasonably priced classes and workshops are also offered with an option to "pay what you can afford."
Increasingly our community focuses on extending our practice into social action. We host groups including a Heart of Recovery group, a People of Color group, an LGBTQ group, a Warriors in the World group that responds to needs of other social service agencies for volunteers, and an Inclusivity group.
We are a 501C3 tax-exempt subordinate of Shambhala International Vajradhatu, under a "local church" designation. In the spirit of full disclosure, this worldwide organization is currently facing a challenging situation where the head of our lineage has been accused of clergy sexual misconduct and has stepped down from his teaching and administrative responsibilities. All members of the former Shambhala International governing body have resigned and a transitional body is putting in place trusted new leadership. A third-party investigation is taking place, and an organization that assists religious organizations in overcoming ethical breaches has been retained. Our community in Philadelphia is working to create local policies and processes that help ensure the safest possible spaces, helping prevent physical, emotional and sexual harm, and responding appropriately and effectively if it occurs.
