About Us

BirchBark is a 501c3 nonprofit. Our goal is to eliminate unnecessary surrender or euthanasia of pets who are in a fixable life-threatening medical situation.

In the first 3 months of 2017, we were able to provide 9 grants to save pets in this situation.

The average grant has been $1,300 in 2017. We anticipate helping at least another 24 pets this year. This number may seem small, but not when you put it into perspective.

We are the only nonprofit in the Central Coast and one of a handful nationwide that provide financial assistance grants that range between 50% to almost 75% of the bill in life-threatening but fixable medical situations.

We work with a community of dedicated veterinarians in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties who discount their services by 25% for BirchBark grantees. No other local organization has that agreement in place. This makes saving a loved and otherwise healthy pet a more likely outcome for those who are struggling to get by in our community.

We also work to educate all pet owners on how to become the best advocate possible for their pet through information on our website, speaking engagements, holding events throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
