The Sabuka informal settlement is situated on the North of Pretoria There are approximately 1000 households and more than 3000 people living there. Approximately 1000 are females of which more than 50% are unemployed. There are no basic services within the community and many household live below poverty lines. The community members are from neighboring countries. The socio and political climate in the neighboring countries (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lusaka, Malawi and Lesotho) has led to an increase migration of people to South Africa with the hope of finding job opportunities and find that they cannot afford formal housing hence settle in shacks/informal houses near areas of economic opportunities. These squatter camps are often illegal and without basic services. Unlike their partners who take any odd jobs ( plumbing/bricklayers act), women remain at home unemployed.
