As steward of half of the nation's blood supply, the top priority of the American Red Cross is assuring its safety and availability for vulnerable patients whenever and wherever its needed. Since establishing the first civilian blood service after World War II, the Red Cross has been a leader in biomedical product safety and development. Thanks to more than 6 million blood donations voluntarily given each year through our network of 36 Blood Services regions, the Red Cross saves and improves thousands of lives every day.
