Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven

Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven (NHS) was incorporated in 1979 with a mission to revitalize and stabilize selected residential neighborhoods in the City of New Haven and to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to low- and moderate-income families. Our affordable housing development activities, along with our commitment to historic preservation and energy conservation have made NHS unique among nonprofit housing developers in New Haven. We have always maintained a commitment to our Community Building and Organizing line of business, which plays a major role in the revitalization of our distressed residential neighborhoods.

In 2001 NHS opened the New Haven HomeOwnership Center (HOC) as an NHS subsidiary to provide prospective homeowners with extensive pre- and post-purchase homebuyer education programs that include financial literacy training as well as several savings programs. More recently, the HOC mission has been to provide foreclosure intervention assistance to homeowners who are at risk of losing their homes. The combined mission of Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven and the New Haven HomeOwnership Center is to stabilize and revitalize New Haven's neighborhoods through increased homeownership; to develop affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families; to provide homebuyer education and financial/credit counseling to prospective homebuyers in New Haven; and to preserve homeownership by providing loss mitigation counseling and foreclosure intervention assistance to homeowners in danger of losing their homes
