    To improve the lives of youth, adults and families by teaching basic literacy and life skills for economic and social success. When you help someone to read, you enable that individual to take advantage of a new world of opportunities.

    About Us

    Horry County Literacy Council (HCLC) originated in 1976, gained 501(c)3 and nonprofit status in 1981 and obtained accreditation status with ProLiteracy, a nationally recognized organization, in 2012. HCLC volunteers provide free one on one tutoring and materials to youth and adults who could otherwise not afford these services. HCLC has expanded over time to provide multiple programs:

    Adult Basic Literacy for those reading below a fifth-grade level

    GED(r) preparation

    English as a Second Language

    learning difficulties, such as dyslexia

    Health Literacy

    Read & Create
