The University of Auckland was founded in 1883 and is New Zealand’s leading research university. It is also the country’s largest university with 38,000 students, 4,800 of whom are international students from 80 countries around the world.

Worldwide Networks As New Zealand’s largest and leading research intensive university, The University of Auckland has a number of significant affiliations. It is the only New Zealand member of Universitas 21, an international network of 20 research intensive universities and is also a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), a consortium of 37 leading research universities in the Pacific Rim region.

Library The University of Auckland has the biggest university library in New Zealand, and specialist libraries for some faculties. The library holds almost two million volumes of books and periodicals and access to over 58,000 electronic journals, 500+ online research databases, audio-visual materials, manuscripts and newspapers.
Auckland- A Top Five City The University of Auckland city campus is located in the centre of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest and most multicultural city, which was recently ranked 5th in the world for quality of living (Mercer Human Resource Consulting, 2007). Auckland is a dynamic city, you can live within half an hour of stunning surf beaches, mountain bike tracks, bush walks and subtropical islands. In addition there are great cafés and bars, an exciting nightlife, terrific shopping and colourful Polynesian and Asian cultural influences. With the central campus location, you will be well placed to take advantage of some fantastic part-time work and career opportunities.
Domestic Fees for PhD Students From 1 January 2006, new international PhD students will be accorded domestic status for the purpose of tuition fees. Dependent children will also be classified as domestic students in New Zealand primary and secondary schools. Your spouse or partner will be able to apply for an open work permit valid for the duration your course of study, while you can work up to 20 hours a week part-time. After completing a PhD, many students are able to find jobs and even migrate to New Zealand with their families. Completion of a PhD may attract extra points under the General Skills category making it possible to apply directly for permanent residence.
Exchange Programmes The University of Auckland offers an international exchange programme which gives you the opportunity to spend a semester or two of your programme at one of more than 90 partner universities in 25 different countries. We also welcome incoming study abroad and international exchange students from all over the world.
