About Us

In partnership with our 179 member organizations in over 100 countries, the FIDH New York office is responsible for advocacy initiatives targeted at the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly and other UN offices, as well as some advocacy efforts aimed at government representatives in Washington, DC.

Our activities include:

• Developing advocacy strategies on thematic issues (e.g. the protection of human rights defenders, human rights while countering terrorism, international justice mechanisms) and countries in crisis (e.g. Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burma, Indonesia, Yemen, Syria, Haiti) in order to advance the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms through UN mechanisms

• Bringing local human rights defenders (from Indonesia, Belarus, Afghanistan, etc.) to New York and Washington DC for advocacy meetings with senior UN and government officials

• Analyzing UN policies and programs in crisis situations, and developing and presenting policy recommendations to strengthen the work of the UN in upholding human rights
