    About Us

Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC) works to transform the lives of children affected by extreme poverty, hunger, illness, persecution, abuse, and neglect. Our projects focus on helping some of the most disadvantaged, socially excluded, and vulnerable children and young people in Thika District, Kenya. The children and families we work with come from backgrounds of abject poverty, family breakdown, abandonment, and abuse. They are often forced to live on the streets, working and begging for money for food, in conflict with local residents and the police. Many resort to substance abuse as a means of escaping the cold and hunger which pervade their daily lives. We believe that these children have the capacity and desire to transform their lives. Our main focus areas are:

    1. Child Protection – All our programs revolve around child protection. At Action for Children in Conflict we are committed to safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, abuse, and neglect. Our approach involves proactive measures like promoting positive parenting and addressing harmful social norms, as well as reactive interventions such as providing safe shelters and psychosocial support for affected children. We currently have two projects running under child protection; 4R + P (Rescue, rehabilitation, Reintegration and Resocialization + Prevention) and Time to Play project.
    2. Education empowerment – It revolves around the idea to give the child access to quality education. AfCiC is able to contribute to this Global motive by sponsoring children from vulnerable backgrounds. In synchronicity with our vision, our Education Empowerment narrative emphasizes on Equal Opportunity, Liberation from Ignorance, Personal Growth, Economic Empowerment, Social Cohesion. We have two programs under the education empowerment; Child Sponsorship and Vocational training and skills development.
    3. Women Empowerment for Gender Equality – At Action for Children in Conflict, our approach to gender equality involves addressing social and cultural norms that perpetuate gender inequality by promoting education, raising awareness about women's rights, and challenging discriminatory practices. To support these efforts we provide safe spaces and support services for survivors of gender-based violence, alongside advocacy for legal and policy reforms that ensure equal rights and opportunities. We currently have two projects under women empowerment; Access to Justice and Legal Aid (AJLAP) and Wezesha Wasichana project.
    4. Climate Change – Action for Children in Conflict contributes to reducing the adverse effects of climate change through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, advocating for policy changes, promoting renewable energy and sustainable land management. Additionally, we are empowering vulnerable communities to adapt to the increasingly severe impacts of climate change, through initiatives like climate-resilient agriculture, water conservation projects and through offering learning opportunities to members of the society. We have two programs focused on climate change Agrihub (Climate-smart agriculture) and Green Schools (Tree planting) projects.

As part of enhancing child protection, AfCiC has two children centers that cater for the needs of the vulnerable children.

    1. Temporary Rescue Center (TRC) – The rehabilitation center which is located at Karibaribi, Ngoigwa, Thika in Kiambu County, serves as a safe haven where street children rescued from Streets. In the center they are provided with food, shelter, clothing and a formal and non-informal education in a protective and nurturing environment.
    2. Majengo Working Children Center – The program has been encouraging street children to attend our Outreach Programme for Vulnerable Children centre (OPVC) daily from morning untill late afternoon, to keep them away from the streets whilst involving them in activities like life skills, art and sports.
