RESPOND, Inc. partners with individuals, families and communities to end the serious public health issue of domestic violence. Respond strives to achieve its mission through prevention, intervention, advocacy and direct services that promote safe, healthy relationships. RESPOND, Inc., a pioneer in the movement to end domestic violence, is New England's first domestic violence agency and the second oldest in the nation. Its work began in the early 1970s, when four Somerville, Massachusetts women started a grassroots effort to support victims of domestic violence by opening their own homes as safe havens for women fleeing abuse. In 1974, these "founding mothers" formed Respond, Inc. For over 40 years RESPOND has provided life-saving emergency shelter, support services, training and education to more than 150,000 members of the community. RESPOND provides emergency shelter and a range of support services to approximately 10,000 survivors of domestic violence, including adults, children and teens, each year. RESPOND staff work with survivors of domestic violence to address their immediate and long-term needs, providing emotional support, counseling, intensive advocacy, information and referrals. Through RESPOND's programs, individuals and families in crisis develop the concrete tools necessary to regain control of their own lives—from parenting skills and housing search to literacy skills, and the hands-on experience of advocating for themselves. Services are free, confidential and currently offered in multiple languages. The Crisis Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All other Community Services are available by appointment and for walk-ins.
