About Us

The Indiana/Hoosier Chapter of the Sierra Club celebrated 25 years of environmental activism in 2000. It is an active and vibrant organization that works to accomplish the Sierra Club's mission to:

1. Explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth.

2. Practice and promote responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources.

3. Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.

John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club and "Father of our National Parks", lived in Indiana from the spring of 1866 through June, 1867. He worked at a carriage-parts factory, and spent what little free time he had exploring the nearby forests for their botanical treasures.

When an industrial accident temporarily blinded him, Muir wrote that he was, "determined to devote the rest of my life to the study of the inventions of God." When Muir's sight returned, he left Indiana to embark on a 1,000-mile walk to the Gulf of Mexico, and went on to become a wilderness explorer, conservationist, and defender of the environment. He founded the Sierra Club in 1892 and was its first president.

In 2004, the Indiana Chapter of the Sierra Club had a State Historical Marker erected in Indianapolis in memory of John Muir, and continues to honor Muir's legacy by working to protect the environment for all Hoosiers. From community issues and action, to lobbying on a state and national level, the club works to take effective action where it's needed most. Members enjoy volunteering with like-minded folks, and take advantage of the many great outings, resources, programs, and local, state, and national training seminars that are worthwhile and fun.
