    Description

    Volunteer Board Member

    Company Description

Strides in Recovery is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping newly sober individuals grow physically, emotionally, and mentally stronger so they can succeed in the hard work of recovery. We achieve this by coaching people in Los Angeles County addiction treatment programs to train for and complete events ranging from 5Ks to full marathons. By combining physical movement with goal setting and peer connection, Strides in Recovery empowers individuals to rebuild their health, self-efficacy, and long-term sober community support.

As a purpose-driven, community-backed nonprofit entering an exciting phase of organizational expansion, Strides in Recovery is scaling its reach across Southern California. We are seeking engaged, mission-driven board members who are eager to help strengthen our governance, expand our community presence, and build long-term financial sustainability through leadership, fundraising, and strategic guidance.

    Role Description

Strides in Recovery is seeking Volunteer Board Members to join its governing board. This is a part-time volunteer leadership position for individuals who are passionate about behavioral health, addiction recovery, physical wellness, endurance sports, and community impact.

Board members serve as strategic advisors and public ambassadors for the organization by providing governance, financial oversight, and organizational leadership. Members participate in bi-monthly virtual/hybrid board meetings (6 times per year), serve on active committees, support strategic growth, and work collaboratively with the Executive Director and board leadership to advance Strides in Recovery’s mission.

Because we are actively growing our regional footprint, board members are expected to be active contributors—not only in governance but also in helping the organization scale through fundraising, corporate relationships, and community engagement. Board members commit to securing or personally contributing $5,000 annually (with flexible bi-annual, monthly, or event-based options) through personal gifts, corporate sponsorships, peer-to-peer race teams, or donor introductions. Successful candidates will leverage their networks, expertise, and leadership experience to expand our reach and strengthen our financial sustainability.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Attend bi-monthly board meetings (6 times per year) and actively participate in monthly committee work.
    • Provide strategic oversight, governance, and financial stewardship to ensure audit readiness and operational sustainability.
    • Fulfill the annual $5,000 give-or-get commitment through flexible options: bi-annual benchmarks, a single annual contribution/sponsorship, or monthly recurring gifts.
    • Support fundraising efforts through donor cultivation, corporate race sponsorships, peer-to-peer campaign teams, and community partnerships.
    • Serve as an ambassador for Strides in Recovery by promoting its mission, attending community 5Ks/10Ks or race finish lines, and expanding our network.
    • Assist with identifying corporate CSR, healthcare, athletic brand, and philanthropic foundation opportunities.
    • Advise on organizational strategy, facility expansion, and program growth across Southern California.

    Preferred Qualifications

We are especially interested in candidates who bring one or more of the following:

    • Mission Alignment: A personal or professional passion for addiction recovery, mental health, physical fitness, running/endurance sports, or physical wellness.
    • Fundraising & Development Experience: Professional experience or comfort in fundraising, major gifts, corporate partnerships, sponsorship sales, or peer-to-peer campaign organization.
    • Industry Networks: Connections within Southern California’s healthcare/behavioral health sectors, running/athletics industry, corporate CSR programs, or local civic organizations.
    • Executive Leadership & Business Acumen: Experience as an entrepreneur, executive, CPA, corporate attorney, or business owner eager to guide organizational growth.
    • Financial Stewardship: Financial literacy or experience with budgeting, internal controls, and financial reports to support sound decision-making.
    • Board & Governance Familiarity: Prior service on nonprofit boards, advisory committees, or community leadership groups is beneficial but not required.
    • Network Mobilization: A willingness to actively leverage personal and professional networks to open doors for fundraising, corporate sponsorships, and volunteer engagement.

    Ideal Candidates

Strides in Recovery is particularly interested in recruiting:

    • Corporate executives and startup leaders in Greater Los Angeles / Southern California
    • Leaders in the behavioral health, addiction treatment, or healthcare sectors
    • Executives and influencers in the running, endurance sports, or athletic apparel industries
    • Finance, accounting (CPA), legal, marketing, and corporate partnership professionals
    • Philanthropic leaders and community advocates with strong regional networks

Position Type: Volunteer / Unpaid Board Seat

Term Length: 2-Year Term (Eligible for up to 2 consecutive terms per organizational Bylaws)

Location: Greater Los Angeles Area / Southern California (Virtual meetings with local event attendance opportunities)

We are seeking committed leaders who are excited to help a growing nonprofit increase its impact, strengthen its financial sustainability, and empower more individuals in recovery across Los Angeles County and beyond!
