FunGIS Reforestation Project — Adult Project Advisor
Details
Description
Stand behind a young leader while the woods come back.
The Adult Project Advisor for the FunGIS Reforestation Project mentors the Youth Project Lead, helps turn plans into safe and workable field days, supports tools, transportation, and logistics, and steps in on safety so the youth lead can lead. Youth-led means youth-led here: the young person makes the project calls; you advise, coach, and carry the grown-up responsibilities that make their leadership possible.
The project is mycology as reforestation: crews collect fungal samples in the woods, send them to a lab for identification, and map where each species was found. Local samples are grown out in substrate, used to inoculate logs, and the inoculated logs go back into the woods — and the crew tracks which inoculations fruit.
A background check and youth-protection training are required before working with youth. The Green Crew is a youth-led science-based environmental leadership and conservation service program, and a proud program of the Minnesota Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America. Field work builds on the Green Crew's Sunday project days (12:00–4:00 PM), plus a few planning hours a month.
