    Description

Hospice Volunteer - Companionship, Safety & Vigil Support

Hospice care is end-of-life care—that much is true. But at Vitality Hospice, we believe that doesn't mean every day has to be dark or gloomy.

We are looking for compassionate volunteers to join our direct patient care team. As a Volunteer Companion, you aren’t just "sitting with a patient"—you are enriching their remaining months, weeks, and days by sharing in their journey.

The Role: What does being a "Buddy" look like?

Every patient is unique, and you will work to figure out the best way to share your time together. Your visit might include:

    • Active Listening: Engaging in "chit-chat" and hearing the stories of a life well-lived.
    • Activity Support: Helping patients in facility settings participate in group activities or hobbies.
    • Safety & Redirection: Providing a calming presence for patients with dementia, helping to redirect and distract them to keep them safe and comfortable.
    • Quiet Companionship: Simply watching TV together or sitting in silence so that, for a few moments, they are not alone.
    • Vigil Support: Providing a peaceful, supportive presence during a patient's final transition.

    Who You’ll Be Supporting

Most of our patients reside in facility settings, while others are in private homes. They may be facing various end-of-life journeys—including cancer, heart, or lung disease—though many of our patients live with some form of dementia.

In a home setting, your presence also provides a vital lifeline for family caregivers, allowing them to step away for a few hours with the peace of mind that their loved one is in good hands.

    Why Volunteer with Vitality Hospice?

In a nutshell, you are giving your time to support another person who simply needs a friend. You provide the "social and emotional soul" of hospice care, ensuring no one has to navigate this season of life alone.

    Requirements:

    • A compassionate heart and a listening ear.
    • Reliability and a commitment to scheduled visits.
    • Completion of our comprehensive volunteer orientation and background check.

    Commitment & Qualifications

You do not need a healthcare background to be a fantastic volunteer. Our volunteers do not provide hands-on medical care; rather, they provide the "social and emotional soul" of hospice.

    • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Time Commitment: This is a long-term volunteering activity. We are looking for individuals who have several months to a year to give, typically committing to at least a few hours a month.
    • The Right Fit: We are looking for caring, patient, and flexible people who can adapt to situations that can sometimes change rapidly.

Ready to make a difference? Apply today to join our team of dedicated volunteers and help us bring light and companionship to those who need it most.

Most volunteers who do this a while, will say "I get more from it then they give!" I hope you'll be saying that soon, too!
