    Description

SASA is looking for a Volunteer Co-Director for our Archeogaming Education Program to partner in leading the Program together with SASA’s Executive Director, Dr. David Danzig. See the Program Overview for more information.

The leader will work closely with the Executive Director to develop the program overall, and with SASA’s Archaeogaming Education Team and its Team Leader, to create SASA Archaeogaming Learning Modules for use in schools and universities.

Archaeogaming features experts exploring video games that were inspired by the ancient world. SASA’s Archaeogaming Education Modules (AEMs) consist of complete lesson plans, videos, and materials for one school period that use video games with ancient-related content to explore themes and ideas of ancient history and society. The Program is a crucial component of SASA’s efforts to continue building partnerships with educators and institutions across the country and globe. The Co-Director will help lead efforts to collaborate with organizations involved in Archaeogaming, university departments and professors, and networks of educators. They will help craft the direction of the Program and actively help increase its national profile at the K-12 and undergraduate educational levels. They will also partner in grant applications to support the activities of the Program.

All meetings take place via video call and all work is done remotely. Expected work hours are 5-8 per week. As Co-Director for the Archaeogaming Education Program, you will help oversee the Archaeogaming Education Team Leader and the Team, and lead: the writing of guidelines for these modules, the soliciting scholars to help the Team make the videos and complementary educational materials in their area of expertise, the creation of new Modules, and the updating of existing modules. You will also partner with other SASA Teams in increasing and improving dissemination AEMs by building teacher engagement forums and activating SASA’s network of educators. In addition, like other SASA Team Leaders, the Archaeogaming Education Program Co-Director will participate in monthly Team Leader Meetings and work in concert with other Teams and their Leaders as necessary.

This position is most well-suited to an Ancient Studies Early Career Scholar, either a PhD candidate or a completed PhD, who is has experience with video games and pre-modern history in any time period or global location, and has a demonstrated interest in educational innovation, collaboration, and faculty/educator teaching development. People with teaching/research experience who are currently not affiliated with a university are also welcome to apply. They must be flexible, adaptive, and comfortable working independently as new projects and tasks emerge.

    Responsibilities:

    • Oversee the team’s efforts.
    • Assist in planning for the future growth of the Program.
    • Assist in planning for increased dissemination of the Program.
    • Conduct outreach to K-12 teachers to build a network for implementation.
    • Conduct outreach to archaeogamers.
    • Conduct outreach to higher education professors and education professionals.
    • Present at conferences about the Program.
    • Act as a liaison between SASA, K-12 teachers, and archaeogaming scholars.
    • Assist in planning internal assessment and incorporation of feedback.
    • Assist in grant writing.
    • Assist in recruitment for volunteers and paid positions for the Program.
    • Other duties as assigned.
