Description
The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) offers older adults the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children across San Francisco. Foster Grandparent volunteers use their life experiences, wisdom, and kindness to support children in childcare centers and schools, helping them develop confidence, literacy skills, and social-emotional growth.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a mentor, tutor, and role model for children through one-on-one and group activities
- Assist with reading, homework, and developmental exercises
- Engage children in creative play, educational projects, and field trips
- Foster positive relationships with children, program staff, and fellow volunteers
- Provide consistent support and encouragement to children who may lack a regular older adult connection
Qualifications:
- Age 55 or older
- Resident of San Francisco
- Available to serve 10–20+ hours per week
- Passion for helping children and youth succeed
- Income-eligible (stipend available for qualifying volunteers; does not impact government benefits)
- Ability to commit to a consistent schedule in childcare or school settings
