Medical Students, Practice Compassion, Hospice Volunteers, Help with Hospice Promise

Hospice volunteers are the one person on the hospice team that comes to the patient without an agenda, being there only do what the patient and/or family want. Typically, volunteers can read to, watch movies with, or write letters. But the major, most critical task, is in life review and reminiscing. What gives our lives meaning is purpose, that which is defined by the things we're doing and with whom. At end of life, the majority of purpose is found in the patient's memories. Volunteers provide the avenue to help the patients regain their purpose by listening to the stories and bearing witness to the lives well-lived.

Hospice is not just meeting the medical needs of the patients, but is a multi-faceted approach, by including mental/emotional, spiritual, and social support at end of life. Hospice volunteers meet the patients and their families unconditionally, where they are in the moment, without judgement or expectation.

Volunteers typically see their people two to four times each month for two to four hours per visit. We will guide you through training and supervision to best support the work you will be doing.
