Description
This is a three-month volunteer position beginning September 1, 2023. The individual(s) will help non-native speakers of Haitian Creole learn conversational Haitian Creole that will enable them to be comfortable speaking with and understanding native Haitian Creole speakers. Activities will include, but are not limited to:
- Teach life skills Haitian Creole to primarily beginning-level students
- Prepare lessons appropriate for the students’ proficiency level
- Model natural, functional language for students
- Spend 1.5 to 2 hours per week in class with attendees
- Communicate with other volunteers and volunteer coordinators outside of the class and attend training sessions, if needed
Required Knowledge, Skills, Ability and Experience:
- Prior experience teaching preferred
- Fluency in English and Haitian Creole
- Ability to speak well and articulate in Haitian Creole
- Interest in working with adult learners of Haitian Creole
- Cross-cultural sensitivity and a desire to work with students from different cultural, educational and economic backgrounds
- Willingness and ability to attend training sessions
- Flexibility and patience
