    Description

Organization: Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC) Location: Remote (Global / Asynchronous) Position Type: Volunteer (Professional / Pro-Bono) Time Commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week (Flexible scheduling)

    About CALEC

The Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC) is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting multilingualism, empowering multilingual families, and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Our mission is to establish language as a critical life skill through developing and implementing bilingual education programs, promoting diversity, reducing inequality, and helping to provide quality education.

We protect world cultural heritage and support teachers, authors, and families by providing resources to create vibrant multilingual communities. Our digital infrastructure directly hosts free educational platforms, language Advocacy forums, and our international digital bookstore.

    Role Description

We are seeking an experienced Volunteer Web Developer / Systems Admin to take ownership of CALEC’s global digital ecosystem. As a professional volunteer in our Tech Team, you will operate with full autonomy to maintain system security, optimize our web architecture, and implement custom backend and frontend solutions.

This role is ideal for a seasoned developer looking to utilize their tech stack to drive global social impact, ensuring our platforms remain stable, fast, and accessible to educators, families, and libraries worldwide.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Server Administration: Manage server deployments, database adjustments, and remote system terminal tasks via MobaXTerm.
    • Core Website Maintenance: Oversee full-stack updates, backend logic, and API integrations for our main platforms, calec.org and calec.fr.
    • E-Commerce Optimization: Enhance and customize the WooCommerce checkout flow, product page templates, and mobile responsiveness to streamline our global bookstore operations.
    • Community Forum Styling: Support the visual customization, category architecture, and theme integration of our separate community forum platform, newyorkinfrench.net (built on Flarum).
    • System Optimization: Design and implement systemic upgrades for bilingual navigation, translation workflows, and database content synchronization between our regional sites.
    • Security & Performance: Conduct regular platform security audits, monitor server performance, and troubleshoot critical system bugs.

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Technical Mastery: Professional experience in full-stack web development with deep proficiency in PHP, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
    • Platform Expertise: Advanced knowledge of the WordPress core architecture, custom plugin management, and WooCommerce database configurations.
    • Server & Tooling Experience: Comfort managing remote linux servers via SSH/MobaXTerm and building server-side logic.
    • Bonus Asset: Experience with forum-based open-source systems (specifically Flarum) or database schema design.
    • Self-Directed Execution: Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a highly decentralized, remote, and asynchronous environment.
    • Mission Alignment: A strong interest in multilingualism, language advocacy, education, or international community development.

    Work Environment and Logistics

CALEC is an entirely remote, international organization. We operate asynchronously across multiple time zones, utilizing Signal for day-to-day team communication and the Beyond Perfection dashboard for transparent project tracking. You will have total control over your own hours, provided that weekly project benchmarks are documented and maintained.
