    Description

    Volunteer Coordinator

Unruled Masses (UM) is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit building new and dynamic public civic intelligence and nonviolent action infrastructure. Our mission is to help ordinary people expose abuse, map corruption networks, and coordinate peaceful, strategic resistance and democracy-building worldwide.

We are nonpartisan, evidence-driven, and partner-focused for pro-democracy unification. We strive to unite people and partners with intelligence, materials, and communications to help reclaim institutions, dignity, and rebuild equitable, connected, and hopeful communities where everyone is treated as a true equal. At UM, we view hopelessness as a strategic asset for oppression and hope as a strategic resource for liberation. To harness that hope, we need a community that is organized, supported, and empowered.

Who You Are: You are a "people person" with a strategic mindset. You understand that while data and intelligence are the fuel, people are the engine of democracy. You have a background in Human Resources or experience managing diverse volunteer cohorts within the nonprofit sector. You are an expert at identifying talent, fostering a sense of belonging, and ensuring that every individual—from data scientists to community organizers—feels connected to the larger mission.

You believe in equity and are committed to building a volunteer culture that is inclusive and empowering. You are disciplined, empathetic, and organized, with the ability to turn a "list of names" into a mobilized, highly effective civic force.

What You’ll Do As a Volunteer Coordinator:

    • Architect the Volunteer Journey: Oversee the end-to-end experience for our volunteers, from initial outreach and vetting to onboarding and ongoing engagement.
    • Strategic Recruitment: Work with leadership to identify talent gaps (legal, tech, research, etc.) and recruit professionals who are ready to use their skills for good.
    • Foster Connected Communities: Act as the primary bridge between our multidisciplinary teams, ensuring that volunteers feel less like "cogs in a machine" and more like "connected activists."
    • Promote Equity & Inclusion: Ensure that our recruitment and management practices remove barriers to entry, fostering an environment where all contributors are treated as true equals.
    • Engagement & Retention: Develop strategies to keep volunteers inspired and prevent burnout, reminding the team that their collective action is the antidote to hopelessness.
    • Operational Management: Maintain our volunteer database, track contributions, and help streamline communication across our remote global network.

    Exceptional volunteers may:

    • Develop comprehensive HR and volunteer management policies for the organization.
    • Lead the creation of a "Volunteer Leadership" tier to mentor new contributors.
    • Design and facilitate virtual community-building events and town halls.
    • Collaborate with leadership on organizational culture and long-term scaling strategy.

Management Areas of Interest We are looking for coordinators who can help us manage talent across our core pillars: Corruption Research & OSINT; Nonviolent Action Strategy; Creative & Visual Storytelling; Core Operations; and Community Field Organizing.

    Ideal Qualifications

    • Professional Background: Proven experience in Human Resources (HR), Talent Acquisition, or Volunteer Management within a nonprofit or advocacy setting.
    • Systems Thinking: Familiarity with volunteer management software, CRM tools, or project management platforms (Slack, Google Suite, etc).
    • Communication Mastery: Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with people from diverse political and professional backgrounds.
    • Emotional Intelligence: A high degree of empathy and the ability to resolve conflicts or provide support to activists working on high-stakes, stressful topics.
    • Mission Alignment: A demonstrated commitment to democracy, human rights, and the belief that organized communities can reclaim their institutions.

Compensation & Commitment This is an unpaid volunteer role. We are flexible on time, but ask for at least 2–4 hours a week to maintain the health and connectivity of our volunteer corps. As we grow our 501(c)(3) funding, paid leadership positions or staff roles may be offered to those who demonstrate exceptional dedication and impact.
