    Description

Youth Robotics Tournament - FIRST LEGO League Challenge: Qualifier - San Francisco Day School

    What are we?

FIRST Robotics is a program teaching students how to build robots, develop teamwork skills, and foster gracious professionalism. We are seeking volunteers to help host our event and develop the next generation of leaders in STEM.

    What is the event?

We host around 50 robotics competitions throughout the year spanning Northern California. They can be described as a high-energy, science-fair-style robotics competition where kids show off autonomous robots they built and programmed, alongside poster presentations they develop showing how to use engineering to solve real-world societal problems. Our FIRST Tech Challenge events are designed for kids ages 12 to 18, spanning grades 7 - 12.

    Who are we looking for?

Each event requires 20-50 volunteers, including groups for set-up, tear-down, judges, referees, and other roles like check-in. We welcome people from technical and non-technical backgrounds. Positions are available to high school students, adults, corporate teams, and community groups.

Since our FIRST LEGO League - Challenge events are full-day events, we provide lunch to our volunteers.

    Location

    On-site

    San Francisco Day School

350 Masonic Ave, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA

How to Volunteer for This Opportunity

Step 1: Check out the available roles.

Review the available positions (both technical and non-technical) on the NorCal FLL Volunteer Roles page to see what interests you: https://www.norcalfll.org/volunteer-roles

Step 2: Create a FIRST account.

    1. Go to firstinspires.org and click Log In/Register in the top right corner.
    2. Create a new account. (Note: If you are a high school student under 18, a parent or guardian will need to help create the account.)

Step 3: Apply to Volunteer at the Event.

    1. Once logged into your FIRST Dashboard, click on the Volunteer Registration tab.
    2. Choose “Volunteer at an Event.”
    3. Filter by your location (or search for the specific location or tournament date).
    4. Select the event, choose up to five roles that match your interests, and submit your application.

    Step 4: Complete Screening Requirements

Adults (18+) will be prompted to complete a background check and a short Youth Protection screening module online through your dashboard. High school students do not need a background check, but may need to complete a parental consent/youth protection acknowledgment.

    Step 5: Have Fun!

Once you submit your application, the tournament director for the event will be in touch with more details. Positions like “judges” usually require a short 1-hour online training, but other roles can arrive at the event. Make sure to arrive on-time, communicate if you can’t make it, and stay through the whole duration you registered for. Since FIRST Tech Challenge events are full-day events, lunch is provided.

    Have Questions?

If you run into any trouble navigating the dashboard or have questions about the event, reach out to volunteering@playingatlearning.org.
