A little background: Before textiles can be recycled, every piece has to pass through human hands. Textile waste often contains other materials (think metal zippers, paper tags, plastic sequin, and sticker labels), but only certain textiles can be recycled. That’s where FABSCRAP volunteers come in: sorting and deconstructing these materials (i.e., removing stickers and staples, cutting off paper headers and trims like zippers, buttons, and sequins, and placing everything in the proper bins), to ensure the textiles can be recycled. Even better, volunteers also sort for textiles that can be reused by the community, too! Over 11,000 people have already helped us divert 2 million pounds of fabric, and everything attached to it, from landfills. FABSCRAP volunteers make textile recycling (and reuse!) possible.

Who can Volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 12 years old to participate.

Volunteers 12 - 17 years old must be accompanied by their parent/legal guardian for the duration of their volunteer shift. The accompanying parent or legal guardian must also complete and sign the Volunteer Waiver on behalf of the minor.

Tips for a successful volunteer session:

• Dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes as most volunteers sort while standing; we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit
• Bring your own bag to carry home any free and/or purchased fabrics!
• We play music, but feel free to bring headphones
• Feel free to bring water, preferably with a cap/lid; there are also vending machines in the entrance of the building
• Dress for the weather, there is limited heat/AC in the warehouse.
