    Description

Create a Spiritual Partnership with Hospice Patients

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, said, "The primary needs of the terminally ill are spiritual. More than anything else the dying need meaning, hope and love." They are, also, looking for acceptance, an ultimate spiritual source and for dignity.

Spirituality is awareness and connection to a higher power or divine presence, a harmonious relationship or a connection with self, nature, or community; -enabling a person to discover the essence of their being.

VITAS Volunteers can assist with spiritual care by:

    • Being present with the patient and family
    • Listening with sensitivity and openness
    • Honoring and respect the patient’s faith traditions
    • Encouraging practice of spiritual rituals such as meditation, scripture reading or prayer

Remember, all members of the VITAS team provide spiritual support. We do this by listening, caring, demonstrating empathy, all without judgment.
