    Description

    Purpose

    Grandmothers' Village Project seeks an experienced attorney to serve as its Volunteer General Counsel, providing strategic legal guidance to support the organization's mission of developing eco-sustainable, community-centered housing and regenerative programs for marginalized elders.

    This volunteer will work closely with the Founder, Board of Directors, and leadership team to help ensure the organization grows on a strong legal foundation.

    Responsibilities

      • Provide general legal guidance to the Board and Founder.
      • Review contracts, agreements, and memoranda of understanding.
      • Draft or review organizational policies and governance documents.
      • Review land acquisition and real estate documents when needed.
      • Assist with nonprofit compliance and regulatory matters.
      • Review grant agreements and partnership contracts.
      • Advise on intellectual property, trademarks, and licensing as appropriate.
      • Help identify legal risks and practical solutions.
      • Recommend outside legal specialists when expertise beyond general nonprofit law is needed.
      • Attend Board meetings as available in an advisory capacity.

    Preferred Qualifications

      • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
      • Licensed attorney in good standing in Massachusetts, or retired in good standing.
      • Experience in one or more of the following:
      • Nonprofit law
      • Real estate or land use
      • Affordable housing
      • Community development
      • Corporate governance
      • Contracts
      • Environmental law
      • Commitment to equity, community-centered development, and service to older adults.

    Time Commitment

    Primarily on an as-needed basis, with occasional consultation for contracts, governance matters, grant agreements, land acquisition, organizational policies, or other legal issues as they arise. Estimated commitment: approximately 1-3 hours per month on average, although some months may require no time at all, while others may involve additional consultation for significant projects or transactions.
