Home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) are delivered to older adults who are homebound from various nutrition sites around the city. Meals are provided to qualified individuals, age sixty or older, who are homebound due to illness.
Volunteers provide a needed service in delivering meals to homebound older adults. Over 500 meals are served daily on approximately 84 routes. Although the volunteer's primary task is to deliver a nutritional meal to homebound participants, social connection is a very important aspect of this responsibility. Often the volunteer delivering meals is the only social interaction for a homebound senior. The Nutrition office depends on volunteers to report any changes or information concerning the Meals on Wheels client.
In addition to meal delivery, Congregate and Group Nutrition Sites offer an opportunity for seniors age 60 and older to come to neighborhood locations for a nutritious lunch, socialization and activities. Most sites are open from 9am to 1pm Monday through Friday. Volunteers are also needed to support supervisors at these sites.
