University Health’s No One Dies Alone (NODA) program is returning. The volunteer-based program provides support, compassion, comfort, and reassurance to patients who are gravely ill and may not have friends or family involved. It is also a respite program to help provide relief for family members who are overburdened. NODA offers patients one of the most valuable gifts - a dignified death. Volunteers, called Caring Companions, sit with patients and provide social, emotional, and spiritual support. They may play music, pray, hold a hand, read aloud, or just sit in quiet companionship. As the program resumes, it is looking for volunteers. Anyone can volunteer. You do not need a clinical background. UH employees, UMKC Medical and Nursing students, and resident physicians are encouraged to sign up.
