Become a Volunteer Tax Preparer with NYC Free Tax Prep!

Each year, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers rely on NYC Free Tax Prep to file their taxes safely, accurately, and at no cost. By volunteering as a tax preparer, you’ll help your NYC neighbors across all five boroughs save an average of $346 in tax preparation fees and access valuable tax credits. Since launching in 2015, NYC Free Tax Prep volunteer tax preparers have completed over 1 million tax returns and helped New Yorkers save over $200 million in estimated tax preparer fees.

Make a Difference. As an IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Tax Preparer, you’ll provide free, trusted tax preparation for fellow New Yorkers while building valuable professional skills in customer service, financial literacy, and tax preparation. Whether you’re a student, a retiree, a professional, or simply someone who wants to give back, your time will directly strengthen the financial security of families and individuals across our city.

Responsibilities:

• Help New Yorkers file their taxes during tax season (January 2027 to April 2027.)
• Use tax preparation software to prepare accurate returns.
• Connect clients to additional financial health resources, such as NYC Financial Empowerment Centers.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and safeguard client information.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Effective communication and customer service skills.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Commitment to serving New Yorkers during the tax season
• Willingness to complete free IRS training before tax season.
• Bilingual volunteers are especially needed (Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, and others.)

Training:

No previous tax experience is needed! You will receive hands-on training and ongoing support to prepare simple tax returns. Volunteers will be required to pass IRS volunteer certification exams to become IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Preparers.

Time commitment:

• Minimum of one 4–8-hour shift per week from January 2027 to April 2027.
• Flexible scheduling: many sites are open 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends.
• Extra shifts are welcome if your schedule allows!
