Become a Mentor at Orca K-8 School (Big Futures Program)

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is looking for caring adult volunteers to mentor middle school students through Big Futures, our school-based mentoring program.

Mentors ("Bigs") primarily meet one-to-one with their mentee ("Little") during lunch periods at school. Bigs pick a day that works best for them and visit their Little approximately twice a month, making Big Futures a flexible volunteer opportunity that can fit into a busy work schedule. During these visits, Bigs and Littles eat lunch together and build a meaningful relationship. Conversations may focus on school, hobbies and interests, friendships, future goals, career exploration, and navigating the challenges and opportunities of middle school.

Through regular connection and guidance, Bigs help their Littles build confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills, and begin thinking about their future. In addition to one-to-one lunch visits, BBBS staff facilitate a quarterly group activity based on our Future Ready Youth curriculum, helping students explore goal setting, high school planning, career pathways, and future opportunities.

Volunteer Responsibilities

• Meet regularly with your Little during lunch periods at school
• Build a positive and supportive mentoring relationship
• Encourage your Little's personal, academic, and future growth
• Serve as a trusted adult role model and positive influence
• Communicate with BBBS staff and respond to occasional check-ins
• Participate in periodic BBBS-facilitated activities hosted at the school

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Ability to commit to a mentoring relationship throughout the school year
• Pass a background check and complete the BBBS enrollment process
• Reliable, caring, and interested in supporting young people
• No prior mentoring experience required

• ORCA K-8 (Columbia City / Rainier Valley)
• McClure Middle School (Queen Anne)
