Volunteer | Fully remote | Flexible, approximately 3–5 hours per week
The grant writing street team is a nationwide group of volunteers who research, write, and submit the grant applications that fund free music programs at partner community organizations. The street team complements the Campaign Cabinet: cabinet members build funder relationships, and grant writers turn opportunities into submitted applications.
What you'll do
Research foundations, corporate giving programs, and government funders whose priorities align with music education, youth development, healthy aging, arts access, or community wellness
Draft letters of inquiry and full grant proposals using our case-for-support materials, program data, and templates
Tailor each application to the funder's guidelines and priorities
Work with staff to assemble budgets, attachments, and supporting documents
Track deadlines and submissions in a shared grants calendar
Help prepare reports to funders after grants are awarded
Who we're looking for
Strong, clear writers who can follow a funder's guidelines to the letter
Comfortable with research, detail work, and deadlines
Grant writing experience is welcome but not required; we provide training, templates, and mentorship from experienced fundraising professionals
Students, early-career professionals, and career changers building a grant writing portfolio are encouraged to apply

How to Volunteer for This Opportunity
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Practicing Musicians Foundation. We are seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about supporting musicians and the arts through successful grant research and proposal writing. We welcome willing individuals regardless of whether they have extensive experience.
To help us evaluate your qualification and experience please submit the following if possible:
Resume highlighting your professional experience, education, and relevant volunteer work.
Cover Letter (1–2 pages) explaining:
- Why you are interested in volunteering with the Practicing Musician Foundation.
- Your experience with grant research, grant writing, fundraising, or nonprofit development.
- Any experience working with arts organizations, music programs, education, or other nonprofit organizations.
- What strengths and skills you would bring to our organization.
Writing Sample
Please include one of the following:
- A grant proposal or grant narrative you have written (remove any confidential information if necessary).
- A funding request, case statement, or similar professional writing sample.
- If you have not written a grant before, submit a writing sample that demonstrates your research, organization, and persuasive writing abilities.

Volunteer Commitment
This is a volunteer position intended to support the mission of the Practicing Musician Foundation. This opportunity is not an offer of employment. However, while there is no financial compensation, volunteers will gain valuable nonprofit grant-writing experience, build a professional portfolio, and help create meaningful opportunities for practicing musicians through successful fundraising.
Qualified applicants may be invited to participate in a brief virtual interview and may be asked to complete a short grant-writing or research exercise as part of the selection process.
