2026 State Soccer Referee

Special Olympics Maine is seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers to serve as Soccer Referees at local, area, and state-level competitions. Soccer referees play an important role in creating a safe, fair, and positive competition environment for all athletes.

Referees will officiate matches in accordance with Special Olympics Maine soccer rules and regulations, ensuring that games are conducted fairly while promoting sportsmanship, respect, and inclusion.

Special Olympics Maine Soccer Match Descriptions:

• 5-A-Side games on youth size soccer fields
• 2, 8-minute running halves
• 4-minute half time

Key Responsibilities

• Officiate soccer matches in a fair, consistent, and impartial manner.
• Apply Special Olympics Maine soccer rules and competition procedures throughout each match.
• Prioritize the safety and well-being of all athletes.
• Start, manage, and conclude matches according to the assigned schedule.
• Make appropriate decisions regarding fouls, misconduct, restarts, substitutions, and other game situations.
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with athletes, coaches, volunteers, and fellow officials.
• Promote good sportsmanship and maintain a positive and welcoming competition environment.
• Work cooperatively with other referees, tournament staff, and event volunteers.
• Report significant incidents, injuries, or other concerns to the appropriate competition staff.
• Remain attentive and engaged throughout the assigned match or shift.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous soccer refereeing or officiating experience preferred.
• Knowledge of soccer rules and basic officiating procedures.
• Ability to remain calm, objective, and professional in a competitive environment.
• Strong communication and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work effectively with athletes of varying ages and abilities.
• Commitment to the mission and values of Special Olympics.

Time Commitment

Volunteer referees may assist with individual matches, competition sessions, or full tournament days. Scheduling will be coordinated based on volunteer availability and event needs.
