    Description

Hockey Coach – Girls Youth Development Program

    About The Empowerment Effect

Founded in 2022, The Empowerment Effect is a women-led nonprofit dedicated to advancing sports equity and empowering girls ages 7–17 in the Los Angeles area. Our signature Developmental Hockey Program is completely free for all participants, providing full gear, on-ice training, off-ice personal development workshops, and community events to help young girls build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills.

    Role Overview

We are seeking dedicated Coaches to guide our participants both on and off the ice. In this holistic role, you’ll not only lead on-ice practice drills, but also actively participate in our monthly personal development workshops, dryland training, and team community events. You'll play a central role in creating an uplifting environment where young athletes feel seen, supported, and unstoppable.

Time Commitment & Schedule (Oct – May)

Average Commitment: ~2 weekend sessions per month (approx. 4–6 hours/month total)

We rotate locations across Southern California to keep the program accessible:

    • On-Ice Practices & Scrimmages: 2x/month | Sunday afternoons @ East West Ice Palace (Artesia)
    • Dryland & Workshops: 1x/month | Saturday mornings @ Sports Basement (Long Beach)
    • Shooting Lanes: 3–4x per season | Saturday afternoons @ Toyota Sports Performance Center (El Segundo)
    • Community Events: 1x/month | Flexible weekend timing (LA Kings games, museum trips, etc.)

    What You’ll Do

    • Lead fun, high-energy on-ice practices focusing on skating, puck handling, and core hockey fundamentals
    • Direct assistant coaches on the ice to keep drills structured, safe, and engaging
    • Assist with monthly off-ice workshops and field trips (all materials and lesson plans are provided)
    • Act as a positive role model fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and inclusion

    How We Support You

    • Weekly emails with practice plans so you always know what to expect before stepping on the ice
    • Monthly virtual volunteer check-ins to connect with the coaching team and share feedback
    • Leadership development opportunities and coaching skills training throughout the season
    • Signed verification for community service/volunteer hours upon request

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • Strong hockey background (playing or coaching experience required)
    • Someone dedicated to serving as a strong, positive role model for young women and girls
    • Able to commit to ~2 weekend events per month from October through May
    • Basic coaching gear required on the ice (skates, helmet, stick, gloves)
    • Safety & Compliance (CA AB 506): Must complete a California DOJ/FBI Live Scan fingerprint check and online athlete safety training
      • Note on Background Check Fees: Under CA state law for youth organizations, Live Scan fingerprinting is required. Live Scan vendors charge an out-of-pocket rolling fee (approx. $60). The Empowerment Effect fully reimburses your Live Scan fee after you complete your first month of coaching!
