Enhabit Hospice â Wichita, KS Serving a 60âmile radius
Enhabit Hospice is seeking dedicated volunteers and their certified, wellâtrained dogs to join our Comfort Paws Program. This special program integrates compassionate pet therapy into endâofâlife care, helping bring comfort, calm, and emotional support to patients and families.
Purpose
To provide Therapy Dogs that offer emotional support to patients receiving hospice care, enhancing comfort and contributing to an improved quality of life.
Therapy Dog
A Therapy Dog is defined as a dog that:
- Has been certified by a licensed Veterinarian as medically fit
- Has an appropriate temperament to remain calm in patient environments
- Has successfully completed formal Obedience School training and holds documentation
Dog Requirements for Volunteering
Eligible therapy dogs must:
- Be at least 1 year old
- Be medically certified as fit by their veterinarian
- Be current on all required vaccinations
- Have a calm, predictable temperament
- Not be in heat
- Have completed obedience training with documentation
Health Requirements
Dogs must be free from:
- Fleas, ticks, mites
- Diarrhea, vomiting
- Eye or nasal discharge
- Dermatitis, skin lesions, or ringworm
- Any signs of systemic illness
Dogs treated between visits must provide a Veterinarian clearance note before resuming visits.
Dogs with a history of Sarcoptic Mange in the past 6 months must have one documented negative scraping.
Required Vaccinations
- Rabies
- Distemper
- Hepatitis (adenovirus)
- Parvovirus
- Veterinarianârecommended: Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza
A 10âday waiting period must pass after any new vaccination before the next patient visit.
Proof of vaccination is required annually.
PreâVisit Health Check
Handlers must check their dogs for health concerns before each visit and document this on the volunteer visit report. Any suspected illness must be reported to the Volunteer Coordinator.
Grooming & Handling
- Dogs must be bathed and wellâgroomed before visits.
- Fur and paws must be wiped before entering homes or facilities.
- Dogs must remain on a leash and under handler control at all times.
- Dogs will wear an agencyâissued name badge during visits.
- Handlers supply their own pet treats and materials.
Waste Management
Handlers must walk their dog prior to visits and are responsible for cleaning and disposing of all pet waste appropriately.

Training & Documentation
All handlers must:
- Complete all standard volunteer requirements
- Attend orientation and maintain required documentation
- Adhere to all agency policies and procedures
Financial Responsibility
All pet healthâcare costs, including exams, vaccinations, and grooming, are the sole responsibility of the handler.
Supervision
The dog must remain under direct, continuous supervision and control of the handler at all times.

How Do I Become a Hospice Volunteer?
Hospice volunteers provide comfort, compassion, and companionship to patients and families during one of lifeâs most important moments. If you feel called to serve in this meaningful way, Enhabit Hospice welcomes you to apply.
Below is the full volunteer onboarding process.
â Volunteer Requirements
To volunteer with Enhabit Hospice, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have experienced no significant personal loss within the past year
- Complete a criminal background check (paid for by Enhabit)
- Complete a drug test (paid for by Enhabit)
- Complete a tuberculosis (TB) test
- Provide copies of your driverâs license and auto insurance card
- Complete the hybrid orientation and training program
đ Step 1: Phone Interview
A brief iPhone/phone interview will be scheduled first.
During this call, the Volunteer Coordinator will:
- Answer your questions about volunteering
- Explain available volunteer roles
- Make sure the position is a good mutual fit
đ€ Step 2: InâPerson Interview
After your phone interview, youâll be scheduled for an inâperson interview at the Wichita office.
During this visit, you will:
- Meet the Volunteer Coordinator
- Share your interests and preferences
- Begin the volunteer application packet
- Provide your driverâs license and auto insurance card
- Receive instructions for the drug test
đ Step 3: Background Checks
Once your application is complete, Enhabit will run:
- Background checks
All costs are covered by Enhabit.
When these checks are cleared, you will move to the next step.
đ©ș Step 4: TwoâStep TB Testing
After background clearance, volunteers complete a twoâstep TB test, which requires four clinic visits:
- Visit 1 â TB test #1 placed
- Visit 2 â TB test #1 read
- Visit 3 â TB test #2 placed
- Visit 4 â TB test #2 read
You must complete all four visits before beginning patient interaction.
đą Step 5: Onboarding & Orientation
Once TB testing is complete, you will attend inâoffice onboarding and orientation at the Wichita branch.
This includes:
- Signing final forms
- Reviewing policies and safety procedures
- Training on boundaries, patient support, and visit expectations
- Meeting your support team
This session takes approximately 8 hours.
đĄ Step 6: Additional AtâHome Training
After your inâoffice orientation, you will complete:
- Hybrid training modules
- Additional hospice and compliance education
- Any specialized roleâspecific training (such as Comfort Paws)
đ Step 7: Quarterly Training Requirements
All volunteers are required to participate in quarterly inâoffice trainings, which ensure ongoing:
- Safety education
- Compliance updates
- Skills refreshers
- Volunteer support and connection

Once all steps are completed, you will be assigned your first visit or matched with a patient. Youâll always have support from your Volunteer Coordinator and the clinical team.
