    Description

At Transitions, we believe that exceptional care extends far beyond medical visits. For military veterans navigating life's final journey, having a fellow veteran or dedicated advocate visit can ease isolation, honor their service, and bring profound emotional comfort.

Through our Veteran Companionship Volunteer program, you are matched with a veteran patient in your immediate local area to offer unique peer support, connection, and respect. Whether you are a veteran yourself wanting to support a brother or sister in arms, a military family member, or a compassionate neighbor honoring those who served, your presence is the greatest gift you can offer.

"A shared bond and a respectful listening ear can turn a quiet afternoon into a moment of true camaraderie." "

💬 What You Will Do as a Companionship Volunteer

Because this is a strictly non-medical, non-clinical role, your activities focus entirely on human connection and permitted socialization boundaries:

    • Military Camaraderie & Conversation: Sharing service stories, reminiscing about time in uniform, discussing branch history, or simply having a warm cup of coffee and a chat.
    • Engaging Activities: Participating in Veterans recognition ceremonies, reading history books or local news aloud, playing card games, or listening to classic music together.
    • Quiet Bedside Presence: Holding a hand or sitting companionably so a veteran knows their sacrifices are remembered and they are safe and supported.
    • Caregiver Respite: Sitting with a patient so their hard-working spouse or adult child can safely step away for an hour to take a nap, run an errand, or clear their mind.

👥 Who Makes an Ideal Companionship Volunteer?

    • Empathetic & Respectful Visitors: You possess the warmth, active listening skills, and appreciation for military culture needed to connect meaningfully with veteran patients.
    • Boundary-Minded: You understand and respect volunteer limits. You will never handle medications, feed, lift, or perform physical hygiene care—our professional medical staff handles all clinical needs.
    • Reliable & Consistent: You can commit to visiting your matched patient consistently once a week at a time that works with your schedule.
    • Onboarding Ready: You are willing to complete a standard background check, drug screening, and a free TB test (all provided at zero cost by Transitions).

    🛠️ Training & Support Provided

We ensure you feel completely safe, confident, and prepared before your first visit:

    • Comprehensive, free hospice companion training that fits your schedule.
    • Ongoing support from our dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to match you with a patient close to your home.
