    Description

    Location: Remote

    Commitment: Flexible / project-based

    Description

EthicWise AI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that advocates responsible, inclusive, and practical AI ethics to students and communities. As our organization grows, we are looking for a volunteer Legal Advisor to help us navigate the legal complexities that come with coordinating international volunteers in the US — and to ensure our internal documents meet professional standards. This is a flexible, remote advisory role suited to an attorney or law student with relevant experience who wants to apply their skills in service of a mission-driven team.

    What you’ll do

    • Visa & immigration guidance — advise on OPT-related questions and other visa or work-authorization issues affecting international volunteers placed in the US
    • Internal document review & drafting — review, update, or draft core organizational documents including volunteer agreements, NDAs, liability waivers, and similar materials
    • Ad hoc legal inquiries — respond to occasional legal questions from the operations team as they arise, and flag potential compliance or risk issues proactively
    • Nonprofit operations support — provide general legal perspective on organizational decisions, partnerships, or policies as needed

    What we’re looking for

    • Licensed attorney in the US, or advanced law student under the supervision of a licensed attorney
    • Background or coursework in immigration law, particularly F-1/OPT status, J-1 exchange visitor programs, or employment-based visa categories
    • Experience or familiarity with nonprofit law, contracts, or employment/volunteer law is a plus
    • Comfortable working asynchronously with a remote, all-volunteer team
    • Committed to cross-cultural exchange and international volunteerism

    Time commitment & benefits

Approximately 3–5 hours per month on average, with flexibility around your schedule. Inquiries and document reviews are typically handled asynchronously. There may be occasional periods of higher need (e.g. onboarding a new cohort of volunteers), which we will communicate in advance.

    Important note

This role provides general legal guidance to an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. It does not constitute a formal attorney-client relationship and is not a substitute for individualized legal representation. Volunteers and staff with personal legal matters will be referred to appropriate external resources.
